What a Prat you are Mr ianlouisiana
I just had to reply after reading this totally condescending piece of tripe regarding "Hell Is A City". Personally I have always thought this film to be one of the best British police dramas of its genre! I do not know where in Britain you live, but it is obvious you know little about the Northern/Manchester accent or local dialects!! For a start there is no "one size fits all" Manchester accent. When I was a child growing up in South Manchester in the 50s & 60s you could walk a mile in any direction and hear a totally different accent. Also every community is made up of people from different parts of the country or the world for that matter, so you would be likely to hear different accents/dialects. In the area where I lived, Levenshulme, we had neighbours from Ireland, Scotland and even Canada!! As for the character Don Starling having an American accent. American actors were quite often seen in British productions during the 1950s. This was partly to enable the films to be sold in America, and partly because of The Eady money levy, which was a levy on American films enabling many Hollywood stars to appear in British productions. A good example of this would be Jules Dassins "Night & The City", which was a British based story with 3 American actors in the leading roles!!
